Opening

The rattle is the difference. A plain comforter is something a baby holds; this one answers back, which keeps it interesting through the pram walk or the car seat once holding alone has stopped being enough. Shake it and it responds, and that is usually the first thing a baby works out about it.

It is a square of woven cotton with a soft-filled bunny head at one corner and a rattle sewn inside the body. The head is open at the base, so an adult hand slips inside and it becomes a puppet for tummy time or a nappy change. At around 130g it stays light enough for a baby to lift and shake without effort.

The rattle is why this one is checked differently from a plain comforter. Anything that makes a noise inside a soft toy has to stay fully enclosed by stitching, so the body seams are worth inspecting on arrival and after every few washes. If a seam opens, retire the piece rather than repairing it.

Intended for supervised use. The Lullaby Trust advises keeping the cot clear of loose items under twelve months, so this is for daytime handling and supervised play.

Fit notes

One size only. The 25cm square is deliberately small — big enough to bunch inside a fist, small enough to push into a coat pocket. If you want something to cover a baby, this is not it. It is a hold-and-shake object rather than a blanket, and expecting cot-blanket dimensions is the commonest mistake with this style.

Allow around 1cm variance on the measurements, as the heads are hand-finished. The rattle sits in the body rather than the head, so the weight hangs to one side when held by the ears.

Styling

A second in the same colourway gives you a spare while the first is in the wash. The muted colourways — Light Khaki, Dark Khaki, Olive Green, Dove Grey — sit tonally with cotton muslin squares and neutral nursery textiles. Rouge Red, Yellow, Mint Green and Orchid Pink carry more contrast, and read better as the gift item alongside a bib and booties in a hamper.

Care

Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle with like colours, inside a mesh laundry bag. Do not tumble dry. The enclosed rattle is the reason for both — drum heat and tumbling work against a sewn-in insert as they do not with a plain comforter. Dry flat, away from radiators. Do not bleach.
