Opening

The four corners are knotted, and that is the whole point of this shape. A flat square slides out of a small hand; a knot is something a hand can close around and keep hold of. It is why the knotted corner has been the standard doudou shape in France and Belgium for decades, and why this one stays in the hand on the pram walk and in the car seat rather than ending up on the pavement.

It is a square of cotton gauze with a soft-filled puppy head at one corner and a knot at each of the four points. The paws are narrow and tapered, sized for a baby to bring to the mouth, which is what most of them do with a comforter first. At around 110g it is light enough to lift and drag about without effort.

The knot does a second job beyond grip. A knotted corner closes the raw edge inside itself, so there is no hem stitching at the point where a comforter takes the most pulling and chewing — which is the corner. On a hemmed square that is the first seam to work loose. Here there is nothing at the corner to come undone.

Cotton gauze is woven open rather than dense, so it stays breathable and dries through rather than staying damp in a changing bag.

Intended for supervised use. The Lullaby Trust advises keeping the cot clear of loose items under twelve months, so this is for daytime handling and supervised play.

Fit notes

One size only. The measurement is taken with the knots tied, which is how it arrives and how it is meant to stay — untying them gains a few centimetres but loses the grip the design is built around. If you want something to cover a baby, this is not it; it is a hold-and-carry object rather than a blanket.

Allow around 1cm variance, as the knots are tied by hand and no two sit at exactly the same tension. Knots loosen slightly with use and washing, and can be pulled snug again by hand.

Styling

A second in the same colourway gives you a spare while the first is in the wash. Cream White, Light Khaki and Dove Grey sit tonally with cotton muslin squares and neutral nursery textiles. Forest Green and Blush Pink carry more colour and read better as the gift item, alongside a bib and booties in a hamper.

Care

Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle with like colours. Dry flat and allow longer than you would for a flat cloth — the knots hold water in the middle and can still be damp when the rest of the square feels dry, so open them out to check before it goes back in the bag. Do not bleach. Do not iron the head.
