Opening

This is the fuller version of a new baby gift — the one that covers the whole first visit rather than a single object. Everything in the box is the same character in the same colourway, so it looks put together rather than gathered from a shelf, and it arrives boxed with nothing to wrap.

Three characters: Lion, Bunny and Cat. The palette runs from White and Cream through Khaki and Dusty Pink to Brick Red and Mustard, so there is a version for a nursery you know and a safe one for a nursery you do not.

Fabric and safety

Two pieces in this box need checking that the others do not.

• The teething ring. The only hard item in the set, and the one that will spend the most time in a mouth. Inspect it on arrival for cracks or a rough seam, and retire it rather than repairing it.
• The headband. It should sit loose enough to slide a finger under, and comes off for sleep. Check any bow or trim is stitched through rather than glued on.

The bib fastening is worth a look too. A press stud that has worked loose is a small part in the wrong place, and the neck fastening takes the most repeated stress.

Intended for supervised use. The Lullaby Trust advises keeping the cot clear of loose items under twelve months, so the comforter belongs to daytime and supervised play.

Fit notes

The bib has an adjustable neck and covers the dribbling months rather than one stage. The socks are the piece most likely to be outgrown first, so treat them as the shortest-lived part rather than the reason to size the whole set up.

Every piece is the same character, so this suits someone who will like that character rather than someone you are hedging with.

Styling

Cream Bunny, White Bunny, Khaki Lion and Dark Khaki Cat are the safe choices for a nursery you have not seen. Brick Red Bunny and Mustard Lion carry the most colour and photograph well if the gift is opened in front of people. Dusty Pink Cat and Pink Bunny are the traditional pick.

Care

Take the teething ring out first and wipe it with a damp cloth instead. Machine wash the fabric pieces at 30°C on a gentle cycle with like colours, and put the socks and headband in a mesh bag so they do not disappear. Dry flat or tumble low. Do not bleach. The box is card and is not washable.

What is not included

The gift box is included; additional wrapping, ribbon and a gift card are not. Clothing, blankets, baskets, dummies and anything else shown beyond the set itself is styling only, as is any second set photographed alongside.
