A swan for the pram, the changing bag and the waiting room

The swan lives in the changing bag. It comes out for the pram walk, the car seat, and the twenty minutes in a waiting room where a familiar object in the hand makes an unfamiliar place easier to sit through. The head is open at the base, so an adult hand fits inside and it becomes a puppet for tummy time or a nappy change.

It is a square of double-gauze cotton with a soft-filled swan head at one corner. Double gauze is two fine layers of woven cotton tacked together at intervals rather than bonded flat, which gives it a crinkled, airy handle instead of the dense feel of a fleece comforter. At around 120g it is light enough for a baby to lift without effort.

Fabric and safety

The blanket is 100% cotton double gauze. The head is filled with polyester, which holds its shape through repeated washing where a cotton filling tends to compact and go lumpy.

Double gauze is woven at a deliberately low thread density, so it feels thinner in the hand than the same size in minky or fleece. That is the point of the fabric rather than a compromise on it: a dense pile holds warmth against the face, an open cotton weave does not.

Intended for supervised use. The Lullaby Trust advises keeping the cot clear of loose items for babies under twelve months, so this is for daytime handling and supervised play. Check the seams and the head attachment from time to time, particularly once a baby starts chewing, and stop using it if anything works loose.

Size guide

Allow around 1cm variance on the measurements. Printed colourways are cut from a continuous roll, so pattern placement shifts slightly from piece to piece.

Fit notes

One size only. The 25cm square is intentionally small — big enough to bunch inside a fist, small enough to push into a coat pocket.

If you want something to cover a baby, this is not it. It is a hold-and-carry object rather than a blanket, and expecting cot-blanket dimensions is the most common mistake with this style.

Styling

If one colour becomes the favoured one, a second gives you a spare while the first is in the wash. Comforters get dropped, chewed and left behind, and a baby who has bonded with one shape is rarely persuaded by a different shape.

The plain colourways sit tonally with cotton muslin squares and neutral nursery textiles. The printed ones — Grey Bunny, Green Cherry, White Dinosaur, Green Gingham — read better as a gift, alongside a bib and booties in a hamper.

Care

• Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle with like colours
• Wash before first use — the double gauze softens and crinkles further after the first wash
• Tumble dry low, or dry flat
• Do not bleach
• Iron the blanket on low if needed; avoid the head
• Rouge Red and Forest Green are deep shades — wash separately for the first two or three cycles

Anything else in the photographs is styling only and is not supplied: blankets, baskets, wooden toys, dummies, clips, and any second comforter shown alongside the one photographed. Arrives without gift packaging.
