One decision to make here: bunny or bear. There is no colour to choose and no print to weigh up, which is the appeal if you are buying quickly and would rather not stand comparing eleven shades of grey.

Both are made in a short-pile plush with an open head that an adult hand fits inside, so it works as a puppet for tummy time or a nappy change as well as something to hold on the pram walk.

Pile length is the specification that matters on a plush comforter, and short beats long for this job. A long shaggy pile mats where it gets held and traps crumbs, hair and whatever the floor of a car has to offer, and once matted it does not brush back out. A short dense pile sheds debris rather than holding it and keeps its surface through months of being dragged about.

This is a plush comforter rather than a cotton one. It holds warmth against the skin where an open cotton weave lets air through, so it suits a cold pram walk better than a warm room, and it will not do the job of a muslin if you want something to wipe with.

Intended for supervised use. The Lullaby Trust advises keeping the cot clear of loose items under twelve months, so this is for daytime and supervised play.

Fit notes

The head is cut for an adult hand, not a child's. A baby holds the body and the ears; the puppet function is for whoever is doing the entertaining.

The bear head is rounder and the bunny has the longer ears, which is worth knowing if you are choosing for a baby who has already started grabbing at things — long ears are easier for a small hand to catch hold of than a round head is.

Styling

These two work as a pair more obviously than most of the range, so a bunny and a bear together makes a reasonable gift for twins or for a second baby who is inheriting everything else. Otherwise the bear is the more neutral of the two and the bunny the more traditional.

Care

Surface wash. Sponge with a damp cloth and mild detergent, working with the pile rather than against it, and air dry away from radiators. A short pile recovers from being pressed flat far better than a long one, but heat is what sets a crush permanently, so keep it off the radiator.
