Opening

The design on this one is stitched rather than printed, and on a dummy clip that is the difference that shows after six months. A clip gets pulled, rubbed against a coat and grabbed at hundreds of times, and a surface print wears off the high points long before the strap itself gives up. Embroidery is thread laid into the cloth, so it goes when the cloth goes.

Fabric and safety

This is the section to read on this product rather than the one to skip.

• Clip it to clothing at the front, and nothing else. Never fasten a soother holder to a cot, a pram bar, a car seat, a bag strap or bedding.
• Never lengthen it. Do not tie it to a ribbon, a second clip or anything else to gain reach. Length is the hazard with any soother holder, and the short strap is deliberate.
• Check the clip each time. Look at the jaws and the spring. A plastic clip fails by cracking rather than bending, so a hairline split is the thing to find, and it means the clip is finished.
• Take it off for sleep, along with anything else loose.

Watch the embroidery as well as the strap. Stitching that has been pulled loose leaves a length of free thread, and free thread on something that lives next to a mouth is worth trimming or retiring rather than leaving.

Fit notes

The loop end suits a standard dummy with a ring or a shield opening. A dummy with a solid shield and no ring will not attach, so check the one you already use before ordering.

The clip grips a jumper or a cardigan better than a thin vest, where it can slide. Fasten it through a seam or a placket rather than flat fabric if it needs to hold through a car journey.

Styling

Navy is the only design without a floral or a heart on it, so it is the one to pick if you would rather the clip did not announce itself. The cream-ground designs are the quietest of the florals. Pink and Pink Flower are the brightest. All of them sit better with a knitted cardigan than with a plain vest, which is where the clip has most to grip.

Care

Hand wash the strap in cool water and dry flat, keeping the clip out of the water as far as you can. Do not machine wash, do not soak and do not sterilise. Do not iron over the embroidery — press around it if you press it at all, since flattening the stitching is what makes it look worn.
