Opening

This is a going-out bag, not a school bag, and the measurements are the reason. At 18cm across it takes a phone, a purse, keys and a small bottle. It will not take an A4 book, a folder or a laptop, which is worth knowing before it arrives.

The body is a woven gingham check with a plush animal face on the front, and it closes with a drawstring that doubles as the shoulder cords. Puppy, bunny or bear, depending on the design.

The cord-as-strap construction is what sets this bag's limit. A padded webbing strap spreads weight across the shoulder; a drawstring cord concentrates it into a narrow line, and the heavier the load the more it digs in. That is why it stays comfortable with a phone and a purse in it and stops being comfortable with books — the limit is the strap, not the space.

Pulling the cords tight is also what closes the bag, so it is never fully sealed at the top. Keep anything that must not fall out towards the bottom.

Fit notes

The two bear designs are the larger pair at 20 x 22 cm, around 2cm more in each direction than the puppies and the bunny. That reads as little on paper and is noticeable in the hand — enough for a paperback or a small umbrella that will not go in the smaller size.

Cord length adjusts as you pull, so it will sit high on the back on a shorter wearer and lower on a taller one rather than staying put. Allow around 1cm variance on the stated measurements, as the plush face adds depth that is not in the flat dimensions.

Styling

The two khaki bears read as an accessory rather than a novelty, and are the pair to choose if the bag is going out with an ordinary outfit. The puppies carry the most colour and Red Check Bunny sits between. All five are happier over a coat or jumper than over a bare shoulder, where a cord strap is less comfortable.

Care

Surface clean with a damp cloth and a mild detergent, working with the plush pile rather than against it, and air dry away from radiators. Do not machine wash. A drawstring bag loses its shape in a drum and the cords can twist and knot inside the channel, which is difficult to undo once it has happened.
